Pass Deena’s Law to Close Dangerous Gaps in Michigan’s Sex Offender Registry

Pass Deena’s Law to Close Dangerous Gaps in Michigan’s Sex Offender Registry
The Issue
Any person convicted of a violent sex crime involving force, kidnapping, multiple victims, or a habitual offense should be included in a registry accessible to the public but that’s not always the case.
My mother was brutally sexually assaulted as a child. The man who attacked her later confessed not only to her assault, but to the brutalization of multiple other women and plans for another attack.
Despite this clear pattern of violent, predatory behavior, he was released over 20 years ago and has never been required to appear on Michigan’s public sex offender registry.
Many offenders convicted in 1995 or before were not required to register.
This is not just a personal tragedy it is a public safety gap.
Michigan law currently allows individuals with histories of violent sexual offenses to exist outside of public visibility due to technical limitations, outdated statutes, or the timing of convictions. As a result, communities, families, and survivors may remain unaware of danger in their community or even homes.
“Deena’s Law” is a citizen led proposal calling on Michigan lawmakers to introduce legislation that closes this gap by expanding public access to information about individuals with documented convictions of violent sexual offenses.
This proposal focuses on transparency and public awareness, not the imposition of new ongoing reporting requirements.
No family should have to live in fear or remain unaware of potential risks in their community.
By signing this petition, you are supporting a reform aimed at strengthening public safety and ensuring that Michigan law reflects the reality of repeat sex offenders.
It is time to close this gap.
Pass Deena’s Law.
