Pass Austin's Law in Wisconsin for LIFE SAVING NARCAN KITS IN TAVERNS & BARS
The Issue
My world was shattered the day I lost my son, Austin Belling, to a drug overdose. He was just beginning his journey into adulthood, a bright college student pursuing his dream of becoming a veterinarian. He had a promising future, with a great job and was ready to propose to the love of his life. Austin did not choose this fate; he was a victim of Fentanyl and Xylazine poisoning. In his memory, I invite you to join me in advocating for a change that could save countless lives in Wisconsin and, eventually, nationwide.
I propose the enactment of "Austin's Law," a bill that would require every tavern and bar in Wisconsin to carry at least two life-saving Narcan/Naloxone kits. Furthermore, at least one licensed bartender should be knowledgeable about the signs and symptoms of an opioid overdose and trained in how to use these kits effectively. As a licensed bartender with over 25 years of experience, I know that even a basic understanding of life-saving interventions could make a crucial difference.
Unfortunately, incidents of overdose in public places are not rare, and immediate access to Narcan/Naloxone could prevent these unnecessary losses of life. Statistics indicate that opioid overdoses have surged dramatically, and Wisconsin is no exception to this crisis. According to the Wisconsin Department of Health Services, opioid overdoses have risen by over 45% in the past decade. Providing establishment-based solutions like "Austin's Law" offers the lifesaving support needed in critical moments.
The goal of "Austin's Law" is to create a safer community, reduce tragic losses like the one my family endures daily, and possibly inspire broader legislative changes that save more lives. By beginning locally and expanding federal legislation, we aspire to see a nation that prioritizes the wellbeing of its citizens against the opioid epidemic.
Opioid overdoses claim lives indiscriminately, and Austin's story, although personal, is tragically shared by many families. Let us make sure his legacy serves as a beacon of hope and a catalyst for change. Let us ensure no other parent has to suffer this devastating loss.
