Pass a Non-Discrimination Ordinance for Clayton County, Georgia

Pass a Non-Discrimination Ordinance for Clayton County, Georgia
Why this petition matters

Currently, Clayton County only protects county government workers from discrimination on the basis of “age, color, religion, sex, race, national origin, veteran status, disability or any other basis prohibited” and protects hair styles and textures from discrimination in employment and public accommodations.
However, Clayton County's code of ordinances does not currently protect against discrimination in housing, public accommodations, and private employment on the basis of age, color, religion, sex, race, national origin, veteran status, disability, sexual orientation, gender identity, ancestry or pregnancy status, nor are county government workers protected against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. And Clayton County does not have a hearing officer for complaints of discrimination.
In addition:
- Jonesboro only prohibits discrimination on the basis of “race, color, sex, religion, creed or natural origin” in bed-and-breakfast and short-term rental establishments;
- Lovejoy only prohibits discrimination on the bases of “race, creed, national origin, gender, marital status, age or disability” for library services;
- Forest Park only prohibits discrimination on the bases of “race, color, national origin, religious belief, gender or sexual orientation” for taxicab services;
- Morrow only prohibits discrimination on the bases of 1) “sex, race, creed, color or national origin” for employment in the cable television industry and 2) “race, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, age or mental or sensor handicap” in taxicab service;
- Riverdale only prohibits discrimination on the bases of 1) “sex, race, creed, color or national origin” for employment in the cable television industry and 2) “race, religion, national origin, sex, marital status, age, or mental or sensory handicap” in taxicab service;
- Lake City has no protections against discrimination
- College Park only prohibits discrimination in 1) “race, color, religion, national origin, age, gender, sexual orientation, or disability” for employees of businesses who contract with the city and 2) “race, color, creed, religion, gender, age, disability, domestic relationship status, parental status, familial status, sexual orientation, national origin, gender identity, political affiliation or associational relationships” for those who apply for film licenses within city limits.
Several Georgia cities, counties and consolidated city-county governments have enacted comprehensive nondiscrimination ordinances which apply within their jurisdiction, both before and after the U.S. Supreme Court's Bostock v. Clayton County decision. It is past time that Clayton County makes good on the Bostock decision and protects all residents from discrimination in the workplace or places of business. We ask Clayton County's Board of Commissioners to join the following cities and counties in passing an inclusive non-discrimination ordinance:
- Atlanta
- Doraville
- Hapeville
- Savannah
- Athens-Clarke
- Smyrna
- Statesboro
- Clarkston
- Brookhaven
- Chamblee
- Decatur
- Augusta-Richmond
- Dunwoody
- East Point
