Evaluation of pedestrian bridges on Sunlake/Mentmore blvd
The Issue
Land O Lakes, FL: Currently the two schools located on Sunlake Blvd and Mentmore Blvd have a huge problem in the morning with school traffic and rush hour traffic. The problem is the traffic lights. These lights operate for children to cross via the 'Push to Walk' button. Because of the heavy foot traffic with children coming to school, this button is pushed frequently, causing huge traffic jams for a medium sized community. For example, what would normally take me 15 minutes round trip, lasts almost an hour between the traffic, and the lengthy timed pedestrian light. I've timed this, and the light on the Sunlake side going south and north, can last up to 5 minutes. With the impending apartment complexes in the surrounding area, I fear this will only get worse.
Another example of just how bad traffic is, on Sunlake, going south crossing Mentmore is usually backed up a half mile. On Sunlake Blvd heading north, traffic is backed up all of the way to SR54 (this is Sunlake students being dropped off). On Mentmore heading east, the traffic can sometimes back up for a mile. This is due to the 'No turn on red' signal. And lastly, Mentmore heading west can back up a half mile again, due to the 'No turn on red' signal.
I want to propose to county commissioners, and Pasco Public Works (road division) of the possibility of constructing pedestrian bridges for the children to access their schools without disrupting traffic. The first set of bridges would go across Sunlake Blvd, and across Mentmore Blvd for access to Rushe Middle School and Sunlake High School. The second proposal would be a pedestrian bridge going across Sunlake Blvd at the light where Imagine School is located (I think it's called Suncoast Cross).
Between the lights, the children crossing the road, and time of day (which ties into rush hour), something needs to be done because this situation will only get worse with the new construction happening (four local apartment complexes and Long Lake Ranch construction). I would like Pasco County to at least acknowledge the issue and run a traffic study to see what can be done.
Thank you.
