The Issue

Partridge Green and its surroundings face a number of ongoing road-related problems. The parish council are seeking support from residents for its road safety initiative, and this support will be used as evidence supporting its traffic regulation order application. We petition West Sussex County Council to support the 3 aims of the petition, the council's 'Road Safety Initiative':

This petition seeks to demonstrate public support for 3 key aims of the Parish Council and community:

  1. A 20mph zone for the High Street from the Shermanbury Road village gateway and much of residential infill within Partridge Green - around Oakwood, South Street, Littleworth Lane around the primary school, and The Rise.
  2. An extended 30mph zone around Jolesfield / Church Road, north to the junction with Mill Lane, and Littleworth - Mill Lane and Littleworth Lane (north of the junction with the Rise, adjacent to Bluebells Nursery). There's also proposed a 30mph zone
  3. Double yellow line provision around the Oakwood / High Street junction and Wilton Close / High Street junction.

The proviso for this is that due to a range of factors, increasing pressure is being placed on the village's roads and the road users. A number of concerning non-fatal accidents have occurred in the village in the recent past, & neighbouring parishes have seen fatalities, so as residents we are demanding action before this gets worse.

A 20mph zone from the village gateway is most appropriate given congestion, discourages speeding up quickly before slowing down on approach to the pinch points, and will make crossing the village's roads safer for vulnerable pedestrians. The Littleworth and Church Road exits to Partridge Green again see road users drastically accelerating, and with narrow pavements it makes our village more unsafe. Irresponsible parking around the High Street has caused junctions to be blocked, and views on exiting roads to be dangerous: footways, dropped curbs and pavements have been obstructed, causing problems for wheelchair users and making crossing the road at peak times hazardous, particularly with some road users trying to travel at 30mph. It's in this area that at times the fire station access has been blocked. All of this is barely a 2 minute walk from a free car park at the village hall which often has much spare capacity.
