Parti Québécois: Stop the proposed ban on religious symbols in Québec

The Issue

It is the intention of the Parti Québécois to implement legislation that would ban any visible religious symbols including crucifixes, kippas, hijabs and turbans from being worn by employees within hospitals, schools and any other agency that receives public funding.

Many Canadians would rather flee the province than sacrifice their religious expression such as Dr. Sanjeet Singh Saluja, a physician in the province who stated his feelings of exclusion to Canadian news distributors.

The fundamental rights given to every Canadian, as outlined by the Charter of Rights and Freedoms states everyone has the following fundamental freedoms:

"(a) freedom of conscience and religion;
(b) freedom of thought, belief, opinion and expression, including freedom of the press and other media of communication;
(c) freedom of peaceful assembly; and
(d) freedom of association."

The proposed ban directly opposes the very roots upon which this nation was established. Canada is regarded internationally as a religiously tolerant nation and a ban such as this would jeopardize Canada's reputation as a country.

These limitations are infringements of fundamental human rights and must not be implemented.
