Parliament Must Remove Corrupt MPs for PRASA's Capture

The Issue

UniteBehind seeks your support in persuading Parliament’s Ethics Committee to:

  • investigate,
  •  discipline,
  • and remove MPs who were involved in or implicated in the capture of the Passenger Railway Agency of South Africa (‘PRASA’).

PRASA has fallen into disarray. Most commuters find the service too unreliable to use. Worse still, much of the country’s commuter rail is not operational. Almost none of Gauteng’s train routes have been working since May 2022. In Cape Town, the Central line - meant to  serve the largest number of people - has been shut down intermittently since 2018 and completely since 2019.

In June 2022, Chief Justice Raymond Zondo released the Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture (‘State Capture Report’). The State Capture Report (Part V, Volume II) implicates several people in corruption and maladministration at PRASA. However, rather than being punished, many have been rewarded with positions as MPs, such as Sfiso Buthelezi, Dikeledi Magadzi, Dipuo Peters, and Joe Maswanganyi. The current Chair of the Transport Portfolio Committee, Mosebenzi Zwane, and the current Minister of Transport, Fikile Mbalula, have also been implicated in severe corruption and maladministration. The actions of the above MPs have allowed corruption to thrive within PRASA. The conduct of these MPs facilitated and/or continues to facilitate the collapse of the passenger rail service.

By signing this petition, you are assisting UniteBehind in our efforts to remove corrupt officials from Parliament, stop the looting at PRASA, and prevent the further destruction of the entity.
