Rocky Point, Nanaimo Needs a Playground

Rocky Point, Nanaimo Needs a Playground
The Issue
The Rocky Point neighbourhood in North Nanaimo currently does not have a single community playground for our youngest residents.
In fact, there is currently only one playground east of Frank J Ney Elementary School and it’s up a steep hill (Roxanne Park), so there aren’t really any great walkable options for those living north of Hammond Bay from Entwhistle St. to Neck Point Park. In contrast, there are at least 10 community playgrounds in the north neighborhoods west of Frank J school.
Park spaces are an important part of the health and wellness of a community. They bring people together and build community. Especially during this global pandemic, park spaces have become even more important for keeping kids active and engaged in a safer way in the outdoors. They keep kids off of screens, help them to make friends and socialize, and provide essential exercise for healthy living.
Nanaimo wants to encourage active transportation and reduce driving and yet residents of Rocky Point have to drive to enjoy playgrounds in our community. Bringing a playground here would support the goal of active transportation as well as help build a sense of community and improve child and family wellness.
Please work with our community to bring a playground to our area! Our kids will thank you!
