Parks are for People - Defend JFK Marina Park – Sign our Petition!
The Issue
Yonkers residents won a big victory when we joined forces, defeated the plan to build a massive garage on top of our JFK Marina Park and restored 9+ acres of land back to protected park status!
BUT THE BATTLE IS NOT OVER YET - the JFK Marina South Lawn Gazebo area (aka Parcel 1C) is still at risk. The Glenwood Power Plant developer wants to use our Lawn for private money-making events – weddings, private parties and other gatherings. Yonkers residents will lose nearly 2 acres of riverfront access if the developer is allowed to crowd us out of our waterfront park!
Yonkers on Hudson Alliance is fighting to make sure the Yonkers public will have full access to the Lawn by demanding that the City get clear and concise answers from the developer on:
- How long construction will force us to be ‘locked-out’ of this essential part of our park as the developer uses it for a construction staging area;
- Specifics on the location and amount of South Lawn property that is to eventually return to the JFK Marina Park once the developer has built the road necessary to reach their building;
- Furnish details on the part of the South Lawn that will remain under the developer’s eventual control and influence;
- Require a performance bond in all phases of the project.
Yonkers is New York’s fastest growing city. The taxpayers and voters are the key to our City’s success – not developers. Justice can only be achieved with full, complete and detailed answers to our concerns. Residents need expanded parkland - not parks given away to real estate interests for private gain. The south lawn and gazebo in JFK Marina Park belong to us and must be protected!
Sponsored by YOHA: Friends of Trevor Park, Hudson River Community Association, River Communities Coalition of Yonkers, and Yonkers Committee for Smart Development.
Disclaimer: The request for donations is an appeal from change.org. None of these funds go in support of the Parks are for People initiative.
