Park not Dump - Honey Locust Park Extension

The Issue

We are a group of neighbors who are asking the NYC Department of Transportation to turn a small lot they control alongside the Queensboro Bridge (currently used as a materials dump) into a small park or public plaza.

Historical photos show this was traditionally public space. However, in the early 2000's, DOT erected a fence and began to park their vehicles there. Over time, they have stopped using it, other than to park one truck and store some rusty highway barricades, metal plates, etc.

With the upcoming conversion of the Queensboro Bridge South Outer Roadway into a pedestrian path, this space is well suited to allow easy access to the path.

We are calling this space Honey Locust Park Extension, as it would make a very nice expansion to the recently-renovated Honey Locust Park, further east on 59th Street.

As a group, we don't have any particular use in mind, but it could a plaza, a playground, a small dog park, a cafe, or many other things which would benefit a neighborhood which (studies show) has a lack of public space.

UPDATE: Here is a great clip we got on Fox5 which shows how the space looks now, with some more details.
