New Stadium at Park Hill South High School

The Issue

Friday night football games are as American as apple pie and an essential part of the high school experience, with cheering fans in school swag and colors.  Park Hill South High School (PHS) was established in 1998 and has never had a true “home” football game or track meet and has had to travel to “home” events throughout it's history.  A new stadium will bring positive attention to the PHS football program, marching band, color guard, cheerleaders, dance team, and track teams.  It will also showcase the fact that the Park Hill School District values its PHS students and their experiences.  The value of PHS football, track, and marching band is significant and cannot be overlooked in terms of its profound impact on individuals, the school, and community.  School administrators and teachers know that school pride makes a school a more positive environment.

A new football stadium will draw new football players and their families to PHS, the projected benefits will also include higher GPAs, better school attendance, and better performance in core subjects.  It is a false choice that PHS cannot maintain high academics and have a new football stadium.  It has been widely demonstrated that football can have a uniquely positive effect on school finances through naming rights, sponsorships, advertising, concessions, camps, and other means.  Every other team in the KC Suburban Conference and all high schools in the Northland have their own football stadium, it is a matter of equity and competitiveness that PHS should have its own stadium.  After 23 years of many budgets and inaction, a new stadium for PHS has moved from something “nice to have” to a true need as indicated by all the above.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, the school board of the Park Hill School District shall follow the wishes of the petitioners in their capacity as residents, voters, taxpayers, parents, and students of the district and cause a new football stadium for Park Hill South High School be named as a project to be funded from the proceeds of the District’s next bond issue.
