End Bullying: Petition for a Safer Learning Environment for all Students.

End Bullying: Petition for a Safer Learning Environment for all Students.

The Issue

Republic Act 10627
Republic Act 10627 (the "Anti-Bullying Act") was adopted in the Philippines in 2013 with the goal of preventing bullying among children enrolled in kindergartens, primary schools, high schools, and educational facilities (collectively "Colleges and universities"). It is essential that schools create policies to combat the occurrence of bullying in their diverse institutions.

The purpose of this petition is to halt and prevent bullying in schools in order for students to not be emotionally crippled for the rest of their lives, mental health cases are minimized, and money spent on bullying prevention can be spent on other things that benefit society. Anti-bullying legislation is one approach for changing societal norms.

A lot of students all over the world are experiencing bullying. Whether it’s physical, verbal, or through social media which is called cyberbullying. All forms can cause damage to the person getting bullied. Bullying can increase the risk of anxiety, depression, worsen mental health issues, disrupt academic performance, and negatively impact on general happiness and well-being of the victims. The following statistics show how many students are experiencing bullying:

• According to the National Center for Education Statistics, 20% of students (1 out of every 5) report being bullied each year, putting them at risk for depression, anxiety, sleep problems, worse academic achievement, and dropping out of school.

• A recent survey found that at least 6 in 10 Filipino students are consistently bullied, roughly three times the rate in developed countries.

• According to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development's 2018 Programme for international student assessment study of 7,233 15-year-old Filipino pupils, "65 percent reported being bullied at least a few times a month" (OECD).

• 81% of youth think that bullying online is easier to get away with than bullying in person.

• 20% of students (1 out of every 5) report being bullied each year, putting them at risk for depression, anxiety, sleep problems, worse academic achievement, and dropping out of school

• On average, kids in 36 wealthy countries, including the United States, Japan, China, and Europe, reported bullying of 23%

• Bullying has gotten so out of control. It’s alarming and it has to stop. By signing this petition, you are being an ally to those who are getting bullied

Bullying is getting out of hand. By signing this petition you are being an ally to help keep students feel safe in their learning environment. It’s alarming and it has to stop. Each one of us has a major role to play in order to help prevent and STOP bullying.
