Close VBCPS district to protect students against the spread of COVID-19 (coronavirus)

The Issue

Recently COVID-19, or coronavirus, cases have been appearing in Virginia. More specifically, they are beginning to appear in Virginia Beach. Virginia Beach City Public Schools refuses to shut down schools because there are no apparent cases within the district. Despite this, every surrounding college including TCC, ODU, UVA, W&M, and more have closed and switched to online classes to minimize the spread of this virus. All of those colleges, also, have no apparent cases of the corona virus. Closing the schools and switching to online classes for a period of time will aid in reducing the risk of students contracting this virus. Even if there are no apparent cases right now, if there is one that pops up within the next 2 weeks that’s means a student has been attending school and infecting people for 2 weeks. This will further cause a mass outbreak of the virus in Virginia Beach. Many schools have also had trips to New York and DC recently, where there are currently massive outbreaks. It is in the best mind of the school system to protect the students against this virus by following peocudres the surrounding colleges have made, and shut down schools. If the colleges are doing it why aren’t the high schools, middle schools, and elementary schools also? Especially since our US border are blocked from travel and the virus has now been declared a pandemic. VBCPS needs a wake up call.
