The Monroe Education Association (MEA), representing certificated staff including teachers, nurses, and counselors, is alarmed by the Monroe School District’s plan to bring additional students back for in-person learning.

Although MEA members overwhelmingly want students back in the classroom, we are concerned the district is not adequately planning to do so safely. Teachers cite rising case numbers, lack of PPE and poor social distancing plans as signs the district is not adequately prepared to bring additional students safely back onto campus.

Other school districts in Snohomish County have decided to pause additional in-person learning through January 2021. They cite an unsafe environment given the rise in COVID-19 cases across the county. Most alarmingly, the district’s current plan to bring students back during the pandemic surge does not follow the guidance set forth by the Snohomish County Health District. The health district recommends that cases need to be steady or declining and below 75 per 100,000 county residents. COVID-19 rates currently are rising and  of November 6 are  are in 182 cases per 100,000 residents, the highest level recorded since the start of this pandemic.

Additionally, several safety issues remain unresolved. Administrators have yet to make an agreement with educators about how they will maintain six-feet of social distance between students and teachers in classrooms, common spaces and during recess; sanitation protocols in classrooms, student restrooms, during and after lunch, and before and after school; staff and student quarantine and isolation protocols in the event of a COVID-19 exposure in a classroom or school; and transparency around status of quarantined classrooms and/or cases within a school building.

We need your support to urge the Monroe School Board and Superintendent Blasko to halt the return of additional students until COVID-19 infection rates decrease to recommended levels and MEA has had the opportunity to collaborate with the District around a plan that ensures student and educator health and safety.
