There have been recent developments to Nagaenthran's case, with Nagaenthran's lawyer and the Singapore Attorney-General’s Chambers both taking legal action against each other.
Nagaenthran’s family is intending to sue Singapore Attorney-General (AG) Lucien Wong on the grounds of alleged negligence and the willful disregard of human life. Nagaenthran’s lawyer M Ravi mentioned that the suit will be filed sometime next week, and his family will also be claiming damages. “After putting AG Wong on notice about Nagaenthran’s mental health, they should have just stopped and said ‘Okay, I’ll get someone to review’,” Ravi commented.
Additionally, Nagaenthran's lawyers have noted a further decline in his mental health in recent weeks. Ravi told news outlet Malaysiakini that he has been deferring to Nagaenthran's family for legal instructions, as he observed that Nagaenthran seemed incapable of understanding his current situation.
Meanwhile, the Singapore Attorney-General’s Chambers (AGC) has demanded Ravi remove two Facebook posts which it said constituted “contempt of court”. These posts include a Facebook Live video released on 5 November in which Ravi discusses Nagaenthran’s case, as well as a written post published on 18 October regarding a separate legal case.
Alongside taking down the posts, the Singapore AGC has also commanded Ravi to issue a written apology, and post the apology on his Facebook account by 22 November, 5pm. In their letter of demand released yesterday, the Singapore AGC contended that Ravi’s actions were “without prejudice to other legal remedies” which may be taken against him.
In response, Ravi denied making contemptuous comments in the video, and insisted that he would not be complying with the demands. “I do not want to dignify the AG (Wong) with a response,” he stated. Ravi also intepreted the Singapore AGC’s letter as an attempt to “pressure” him to withdraw from representing Nagaenthran, in response to the international backlash.
