Help save a successful choir elective and a music teacher’s job!

The Issue

It's becoming increasingly clear that the educational system is facing a crisis, and while there are no clear solutions, one certain way to keep students engaged and successful is by supporting passionate teachers and programs that enable student growth and life lessons. Studies have shown that music not only offers a balance between rigorous academic classes and enriching arts like Choir, but it also improves attendance, listening skills, and the social-emotional well-being of students (NAMM Foundation 2014).  Students in high-quality school music education programs score higher on standardized tests compared to students in schools with deficient music education programs, regardless of the socioeconomic level of community (Nature Neuroscience, April 2007).

Truly successful schools recognize the importance of teachers like Monica Chi, who has been teaching at Palms Middle School for 24.5 years. During this time she has worked diligently to expand the Choir elective from just one ensemble to four periods of Choir and an additional a cappella group.  Her classes emphasize teamwork, critical thinking, the study of music history, the performance of multiple styles of music and languages, and training in music literacy. The hallmark of an outstanding choral program, over the years Palms Choirs have earned superior and excellent ratings at various music festivals. Monica Chi’s Choir classes also prepare students to continue their musical education in high school, with countless students feeding into the Music Academy at Hamilton High School and Venice High School.

The Administration’s decision to eliminate the entire Choir program will not only result in the removal of Monica Chi’s teaching position, but it will also result in the eradication of almost half of the music program offered at Palms. Please help us urge and emphasize to the Principal and the Administration at Palms Middle School that the Choir elective and Monica Chi are an essential part of Palms! We would like parents to work collaboratively with teachers to find a way to save her position and the Choir program. Now is the time to take action, as plans for the next year’s master schedule and elective choice offerings are already underway.  Please reach out to the Administration within the first 2 weeks of April and ask them to reconsider their decision about eliminating the Choir program.

Thank you,
