The SHS library has dozens of flags hung up. A flag they are missing, though is the Palestinian flag. The library has Israel’s flag hung up along with a dozen other countries, making Israeli students and others feel welcome. Having a flag hung up in the library is essential because it makes those students feel recognized. I am a Pakistani American student, and on my first day of high school, my dad came with me to the library to pick up my textbooks. As we walked into the library, we looked up and saw the Pakistan flag. We both looked at each other and said, “Oh, look, they have a Pakistan flag.” This is why representation matters. Although it was my first day at a new school, my nerves calmed down because I felt seen and recognized when I walked into the library. I felt like I belonged and wasn’t an outsider, which I always struggled with when I was younger. Palestinian students deserve that. They deserve to walk into the library and feel like they belong because they do. Palestinian students deserve to have the Palestine flag in the SHS library.
