The Issue

As a bridgetender at the University Bridge, I have the privilege of seeing how much it means to the community every day. To many, it may seem like just another bridge, but to those of us who interact with it daily, the bridge isn't just about commuting; it's a part of our neighborhood's identity that we should cherish. Unfortunately, with its rust and graffiti, it doesn't reflect the spirited and vibrant community that surrounds it. Imagine crossing a bridge that celebrates our community's pride, blending seamlessly with the nearby University of Washington's legacy.

The Seattle Department of Transportation plans to repaint the University Bridge in 2026, and without encouragement, they may stick with the same mundane institutional green. Given its proximity to the University of Washington, the bridge is a significant part of the U District experience for students, faculty, and alumni. It deserves to be more than just a canvas for graffiti—it deserves to be a canvas of pride and celebration of our beloved university. Why should Fremont have the reputation for having the only colorful bridge? It's time for a change.

While SDOT may have practical constraints with paint choice, such as potential issues with inspection and heat expansion with dark colors like deep UW Purple, there are still options aplenty. What about gold and lavender to capture the vibrant spirit of UW? Or perhaps gold with purple highlights that brighten up not just the bridge but the days of those who cross it or sail beneath it. With so many possibilities, we believe a creative approach can balance aesthetics and functionality.

The Bridge and the University have stood beside each other since 1932. It's a great place to watch the Huskies Rowing Teams! Painting the University Bridge in these iconic colors is not just about aesthetics but about reinforcing our shared identity. It's a call to action for those who love the University or live in the UW area, as well as those who love Seattle.

Join me in urging SDOT to reconsider their plans and collaborate with the community to select a bridge color scheme that honors the University of Washington. Sign this petition to add a splash of UW pride to the heart of Seattle.
