The Issue

Pleasanton has a traffic safety issue.

Especially over the last few years, the number of accidents on the road have been rising. Nearly 40% of these traffic accidents occur at intersections. Therefore, pedestrian visibility and safety at these intersections are critical concerns.

Painted crosswalks (or mural crosswalks) can help draw drivers' attention to pedestrian crossings, urging them to slow down and thus reducing the risk of accidents. They also create vibrant public spaces that add to the character and values of our city.

This initiative aligns with Pleasanton's ongoing Strategic Plan, which prioritizes continued investment in pedestrian infrastructure, bicycle and pedestrian mobility, and public art. Painted crosswalks would not only increase safety, it would also showcase local culture and engage residents, students, and artists in community improvement efforts - hitting all of the aforementioned goals outlined in the Strategic Plan.

Through this petition, we ask the City Council and staff to approve and implement painted crosswalk projects, especially at some of the busiest intersections in the city.

We hope to make Pleasanton's streets safer, more welcoming, and more reflective of the community we are proud to call home.

Thank you for your petition regarding creative solutions intended to further the city’s ongoing traffic safety efforts in ways that align with our One Pleasanton Strategic Plan. I will share the response below by the interim city manager. The petition request is going to our Traffic and Transportation staff for their information as well. “In considering any type of public improvement, the City follows a process that helps identify the highest priority needs. Proposals and recommendations are then considered by the City Council as a part of the process to adopt the Capital Improvement Program. Intersection design, configuration and operation that affect public safety are based upon various standards that can be defined all the way from the federal level down to county and local. This ties to funding that the City receives for this purpose as well. “As part of ongoing efforts to implement the Strategic Plan. the City Council recently adopted a Transportation Safety Action Plan that includes recommendations to enhance pedestrian crossing treatments in areas that experience the highest incidence of injury. In addition to these recommended corridor specific improvements, the Plan recommends citywide projects including a school area circulation study which would evaluate all roadways within a quarter mile of schools with respect to: pedestrian routes and crossing conditions, Intersection and mid-block safety, drop-off and pick-up operations, Vehicle circulation and queuing patterns, and sight distance and traffic control adequacy. This project would create school-specific safety improvement plans that would be developed with crosswalk enhancements, signage, and pavement markings changes, and drop-off/pick-up zone reconfiguration. “Thank you for sharing your thoughts and suggestions.” Jeff Nibert Council Member | City of Pleasanton
