Paint is Not Protection: A Petition for Physically Separated Cycle Lanes
Paint is Not Protection: A Petition for Physically Separated Cycle Lanes
The Issue
As bicycles evolve from a rental trend into a vital transportation pillar, our outdated road designs have reached a breaking point. The lack of consistent, protected infrastructure frequently forces cyclists onto sidewalks, creating a dangerous and unnecessary conflict between riders and pedestrians. While governments acknowledge this crisis, current solutions remain insufficient. There is a glaring inconsistency between the strict requirements of the law and the fragmented, poorly maintained infrastructure provided to the public.According to the National Police Agency, the amount of accidents involving cyclists and pedestrians in Japan had gone up to 3269 in 2025, showing the urgent need of a sufficient solution.
- Close the Network Gaps: Identify and fix "missing links" in our bike lanes that currently force riders to hop onto sidewalks to stay safe.
- Prioritize Physical Protection: Transition from "painted" lanes to protected cycle tracks using curbs, planters, or bollards to ensure cyclists feel safe remaining on the roadway.
- Implement Safe System Design: Use "daylighting" at intersections to increase visibility and reduce the "intersection trap" that causes collisions when sidewalk riders cross the street.
- Align Law with Reality: Update municipal codes to recognize the distinct needs of traditional bikes versus high-speed e-bikes, ensuring sidewalk bans are coupled with the provision of safe road alternatives.
