Cancel on campus fall semester at Embry-Riddle

Cancel on campus fall semester at Embry-Riddle
The Issue
Sending students back to school during the Corona Virus pandemic is extremely dangerous given the fact that Florida is the epicenter of infection. The school is not providing enough precautionary measures to ensure that students are not infected. All Embry-Riddle students will still have roommates in close quarters which puts everyone at risk.
Extending online classes through at least the fall semester will help prevent the further spread of the virus and will ultimately protect both students and faculty in the long run. Not enough information has been released to confirm that it is in good conscience to send thousands of students back to the relatively small campus since there are very limited means of preventing an outbreak. Regardless of trying to prevent hallway congestion through adjusted schedules, there are too many factors to consider when trying to control a new disease.
The first and greatest risk is when students initially get back to campus. While the university will indeed be providing frequent testing, we still run the risk of exposing ourselves to asymptomatic carriers that may fly under the radar during their initial evaluation. Having students fly in from all over the world and from many Covid hotspots is enough to question if student's safety is being prioritized.
The CDC is still advising that schools remain closed given that the lowest risk is Students and teachers engage in virtual-only classes, activities, and events" while the option with more risk is "Small, in-person classes, activities, and events. Groups of students stay together and with the same teacher throughout/across school days and groups do not mix. Students remain at least 6 feet apart and do not share objects (e.g., hybrid virtual and in-person class structures, or staggered/rotated scheduling to accommodate smaller class sizes)" (Center for Disease Control).
It is ultimately up to students and parents as to whether they want to send their students to campus, but in order to prevent an outbreak on campus, Embry-Riddle faculty should transfer classes to online only.
