Halt the Closure of Kitchens at Oxfordshire's Community Hospitals

Good food and healthy eating are hugely important parts of well-being.

Decent hots meals are therefore crucial to any recovery for patients in our Community Hospitals. Those meals are at their freshest and most nutritious if prepared onsite.

We are extremely concerned about the decision of Oxford Health to close kitchens in our Community Hospitals and switch to "cook-chill" pre-prepared food.

We call upon Oxford Health to:

(1) Halt the closure of kitchens in Community Wantage, Didcot, Wallingford, Chipping Norton and Witney.

(2) Commit to a thorough public consultation of the Trust’s patients, staff and visitors before making any changes to its catering.

NHS figures show that home-cooked meals are more popular with patients than cheaply made pre-prepared ready meals.

It is common sense that the food patients receive in hospital should be healthy, nourishing and wholesome. But more generally so many of us are now going into hospital with diet-related illnesses and obesity, caused by what we eat, hospitals should be setting an example.

The best way to achieve these objectives is for hospitals to cook fresh food on-site, enabling them to make nutritious meals with care and attention, using the best available seasonal ingredients from the best local producers, and sending patients home with the right attitude to food.

For these reasons, please listen to patients, staff and members of the community and keep Oxfordshire's hospitals cooking!
