Oxford Dictionary needs to update its antiquated, harmful definition of Witchcraft.
The Issue
The following is Oxford Dictionary's definition of Witchcraft:
witchcraft
[ˈwiCHˌkraft]
NOUN
the practice of magic, especially for evil purposes; the use of spells.
"children and goods were believed to be vulnerable to the witchcraft of jealous
It is disappointing to see such antiquated, false, and DANGEROUS information from modern dictionaries and simple google searches. This is exactly the kind of ignorance that perpetuated the unnecessary murders of millions of women, men, and even animals, all over the world. Witchcraft is a branch of Paganism, and Paganism is an umbrella term for nature-based religions. There is absolutely nothing inherently "evil" about it!
WItchcraft is a practice of spiritual evolution and the worship of nature. Damaging definitions such as this put those who practice witchcraft in danger of being accused of evils acts, "satanism", and harming people and animals, among other ridiculous things.
You know what real witches do? We grow gardens, heal with herbal medicine, heal with energy, meditate, advocate for human and animal rights, advocate for saving our planet, and seek out self love and personal growth so that we may be the kind of people who HELP in this world, NOT HURT... And so on. Sure there are witches out there who are up to no good but doesn't every religion have followers who are up to no good?
Please PLEASE tell me what is evil about this?
I demand that Oxford Dictionary change this 500 year old definition and afford witches the same basic respect that is afforded to other religions.
Your fellow witch and non-evil human,
Nikole
