Save Bertie Park, Oxford

Save Bertie Park, Oxford
The Issue
Please help us to save the Bertie Place Recreation Ground!
The Bertie Place Recreation Ground is well integrated into the community, providing a life-line for the young people of our community and their families. It contains a playground and a hard-surfaced multi-use games area (MUGA) popular all year round with people of all ages. These are visible from the surrounding houses, and people walk their dogs on the surrounding grass. The path through the middle of the park is part of a national cycle route and used by people walking into town. The site also builds community; many conversations, across generations, happen here.
In order to build on the site, Oxford City Council currently plans to retain the playground and MUGA within its current site. This means that the recreation ground would be shrunk down to less than 10% of its current size. The council have to replace like with like. So that there is no nett loss facilities, the council intends to reprovide the public open space on an area of wasteland which is joined corner to corner with the current site in the form of a nature trail of an area equivalent to the public open space that would be lost on the recreation ground. They will be enhancing and landscaping this area "to provide additionality", but there has been a consultation with the police with regard to site B. The wasteland is not overlooked and so has a history of antisocial behaviour, the police are therefore happy with a nature trail, but this is not considered to be safe for young children to run round unsupervised, parents would need to go with them.
