Keep Hermit Crabs in Their Natural Habitat

Keep Hermit Crabs in Their Natural Habitat
The Issue
Hermit Crabs deserve to live in their natural crabitat, not in over packed cages. In all novelty stores along the Wildwood, New Jersey boardwalk, most sell hermit crabs. Hermit crabs that are sold on the boardwalk are kept in inhumane cages. They are piled on top of eachother, have little water to hydrate the 60+ crabs in said enclosures, and when the crabs are sold, they aren’t given the right size cages, food, climbing accessories, or bedding. Those who do purchase these hermit crabs do not know the proper care needed for these animals. They are NOT starter pets that a child should be given as a souvenir. Also it is a mystery where these animals come from. Where are they getting hundreds to thousands of hermit crabs? They are forced from their shells and sometimes glued into a new painted shell for sale. Hermit crabs can live for up to 30 years in the wild, but they don’t becuase of the ways they are stripped from their home and forced to be sold on a hot boardwalk with little to no water or food piled on top of eachother. Hermit crabs can’t even be released in New Jersey becuase they belong to a tropical climate. This is an inhumane practice and should be abolished. There are better keep sakes than an animal’s life.
