As a licensed architect, passionate resident, and parent of two, I have cherished the amenities of Green Lake, especially Evans Pool. However, I now find myself compelled to speak out against the landmark status  granted to Evans Pool—a decision that, while well-intentioned, undermines the future development and modernization needed in our community. 

Evans Pool, part of the planned Green Lake Community Center (GLCC) project, requires significant updates to meet the needs of our growing, diverse community. This designation stands as an obstacle to developing a facility that is safe, sustainable, and fully accessible to all.

Currently, Evans Pool faces several challenges. The facilities are outdated, lacking energy-efficient systems and modern amenities that could benefit the environment and quality of life for all residents. 

The landmark status complicates plans for new construction or major renovations that would allow us to cater to a larger number of community members. Without the ability to modernize, the pool is falling out of use due to growing maintenance costs and outdated features. This landmark status could hinder the Parks department's ability to allocate necessary funds in supporting comprehensive improvements. Other communities in similar situations have successfully delisted properties or amended landmark designations to enable critical improvements. Overturning the landmark status does not mean erasing history; it means embracing a future where Green Lake Community Center can continue to be a place for health, wellness, and community engagement.
