Overturn the 3-Day Rent or Quit Rule in California for a 60-day Grace Period

The Issue

As a survivor of homelessness myself, I know all too well the devastating impact the current rent or quit laws can have on families, relegating too many to the dire straits of street dwelling. It is urgent that we reconsider the mandated 3-day notice to pay rent or quit, a ruling which can be especially punishing for vulnerable populations such as families and the elderly.

In our state of California, this unjust ruling has spurred an increase in homelessness and poverty, a social malaise we must address immediately. Contrary to its intent, the ruling burdens landlords as well with financial pressure and the lengthy, cost-intensive eviction process.

Consequently, we propose a humane and considerate alternative: Grant a 60-day grace period for tenants to catch up on rent. During this time, as long as payments are being made, no eviction proceedings should take place. This would not only give tenants a lifeline in dire situations but would also reduce costs associated with eviction for landlords.

This compassionate approach is crucial. According to a report by UCLA, homelessness rose by 12.7% in LA County despite a decrease in unemployment (UCLA's Luskin Institute of Inequality and Democracy, 2021). This data mirrors the urgent need for a more thoughtful, fair, and effective rent or quit policy.

Imperative as it is, this fight also resonates with my own personal struggles. As someone who has seen the dark face of homelessness firsthand, this plea for change comes from more than just a place of civic duty. It is incumbent upon us to make this significant modification, for ourselves, for our neighbors, for California, and to ensure that no person's dignity is reduced to a 3-day ultimatum. Please sign this petition to indicate your support for this crucial legislative change.
