The Issue

My name is Josh. For the past five years, I have been safely consuming Kratom and Kava, experiencing no negative health effects. This practice is not merely a personal habit, but a significant aspect of my lifestyle shared by many in my community. Despite our responsible use, the recent passing of house HB 1489 and CS/SB 1734, known as the Florida Kratom Consumer Protection Acts, threatens our freedom to continue this practice. These Acts seem based on misunderstanding and misinformation about Kratom, which is an issue of deep concern to me and my community.

Reputable studies indicate that when used responsibly, Kratom can indeed be safe, with potential benefits such as temporary relief of acute or chronic pain, and as part of the management of opioid withdrawal. A report published in the Journal of the American Osteopathic Association indicates that Kratom-related toxicity is comparably rare, and occurs mostly when used in combination with other substances.

While consumer protection remains a vital concern, penalizing all consumers of Kratom due to the irresponsible actions of a few, seems unbalanced. It appears more fitting to address any concerns by implementing sensible regulations, focusing on sanitation, purity, and proper labeling, rather than an outright ban or excessive restrictions.

We urge our policy makers to re-evaluate their stance. A reconsideration of the Florida house HB 1489 and CS/SB 1734 will allow individuals like myself, together with my community, to continue enjoying a lifestyle that we know, through personal experience and scientific backing, to be safe and beneficial to us. The personal freedoms of many Floridians are at stake, and we ask for your solidarity in this matter. Please sign this petition to support us in overturning these unforgiving Acts.
