Overturn Breed Specific Legislation in the Dangerous Dog Act of UK, Scotland, and Ireland
The Issue
I am heartbroken at the unfairness faced by numerous dogs across UK, Scotland, and Ireland just because they resemble certain banned breeds as specified by Breed Specific Legislation (BSL) in the Dangerous Dogs Act. This deeply personal struggle appears self-evident every day as I witness innocent dogs being condemned simply by virtue of their physical attributes - by just the measure of a tape. In 2024, it is high time we let evidence-based lawmaking come before unjust biases.
BSL propagates the irrational belief that the breed of a dog inherently determines its temperamental traits rather than their upbringing and care. According to the RSPCA, this has led to the euthanasia of thousands of dogs that haven’t harmed anyone or posed a real risk (Animal Behaviour Science, 2014). On top of providing substantial stress to responsible pet owners, it contradicts research showing that breed does not premeditate behaviour or risk levels. This is a grossly unjust situation, that thousands of loving and loyal dogs face persecution, purely on the basis of their appearance and not their individual behaviour.
No dog should pay for another dog's or owner's crime. The Dangerous Dogs Act should not continue with breed discrimination in this day and age. We call upon the relevant legislative bodies of the UK, Scotland, and Ireland to audit the effectiveness of BSL and uphold animal welfare principles, by removing breed prejudice from its legislation.
In bringing about this change, we would create a more compassionate society where every dog is judged by their deeds, not their breeds. Please join me in urging an end to Breed Specific Legislation. It's time for action. Sign this petition today.
