KEEP the Completely Appropriate Sculpture at the Overland Park Arboretum

KEEP the Completely Appropriate Sculpture at the Overland Park Arboretum

The Issue

The Overland Park City Council approved and installed an incredible sculpture in the Overland Park Arboretum. The sculpture (called "Accept or Reject" by Yu Chang) is of a headless naked woman with her breasts exposed, taking a picture of herself. The message this piece sends to the children, young adults, regular adults, and retirees in our community has the potential to be thought-provoking.

With all the problems young people are having with taking ownership of their bodies and their sexuality in our Puritanical culture, do we really want to be encouraging children and teenagers to see art and think for themselves? Of course!

There may be no warning that there is a bare-chested, headless bronze woman in the Arboretum, but there's also no warning that there's a sculpture of a frog flying a helicopter, which was clearly dreamt up by someone on some sort of psychadelic substance.

The audience at the Overland Park Arboretum is progressive enough for this piece of art. This piece, like most sculptures of women throughout the history of people, glorifies women's breasts. (It's kind of typical in that sense, but we like it anyway.)

By signing this petition, we are asking the Overland Park City Council and the Mayor of Overland Park to KEEP this sculpture in the Overland Park Aroboretum. Art of this nature belongs anywhere, and we like it here.
