Overhaul the Australian Child Support System for Increased Accountability

Overhaul the Australian Child Support System for Increased Accountability

The issue

I want to share a tale that is all too common for single parents like myself, living in Western Australia with no family or financial support. I've been tirelessly battling for the last 4 years to secure child support payments from my son's father, who lives a luxurious lifestyle while my son and I reach the brink of financial despair on a daily basis.

This glaring inequity and sheer injustice demonstrate the urgent necessity to overhaul the Australian child support system. It is heartbreaking that the failure of one parent to meet their financial responsibilities can consign their children to suffer.

According to the Department of Human Services, 36.4% of single-parent families in Australia live in relative income poverty, with many struggling due to unpaid child support. Indeed, noncompliant parents owe the Australia's child support system in excess of 1.6 billion dollars, emphasizing the entrenched systemic issue at hand (House of Representatives 2017).

The Australian government must see the severity of this issue and introduce stringent laws ensuring greater accountability of refusing parents. We urge an immediate review and reform of the child support system in Australia to fortify the enforcement mechanisms and thus, provide stable financial support for every child.

Help single parents like myself and our children, who are unfairly burdened with the financial fallout of non-compliant parents. Sign this petition to push for the necessary changes in the Australian child support system.
