Over 30-year-old carpet at Northside is putting student & staff health at risk

The Issue

We are calling on Opelika City Schools in Opelika, Alabama to urgently replace the aging flooring at Northside Intermediate School, which serves students in grades 3–5 and was originally built in 1929.

The current carpet is over 30 years old—well beyond its expected lifespan. Despite a recent professional cleaning, its condition has not improved and now appears to be worse. Even solid surfaces after being mopped have been observed to still appear unclean.

Staff have reported health concerns since working in the building, raising questions about indoor air quality and hygiene conditions. These concerns highlight the need for immediate attention to the environment our children and educators are in every day.

Our students deserve a clean, safe, and healthy school setting. We respectfully ask the district to prioritize carpet replacement and conduct a comprehensive assessment of building conditions.

We urge district leadership to take prompt and meaningful action in support of student and staff well-being.
