"Out" Yourself as an Ally at Virginia Tech!
This is an online pledge to show your support for the LGBTQ community of Virginia Tech and the greater southwest Virginia area. The QG&A of Virginia Tech invites YOU to help create a better environment for EVERYONE!
If you would like to have your picture taken, stop by the Graduate Life Center Room D on May 11, 2011 from 9am-1pm and/or 4pm-6pm to 'out' yourself as an ally!!! If you cannot make it out, take a picture of yourself with a reason why YOU are an ally and post it on Facebook here: http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=170692259654541
By signing this pledge I am making a commitment to:
(i) Challenge assumptions, myths, and misperceptions
(ii) Step out of my comfort zone and seek new knowledge about racism, classism, ageism, ableism, sexism, heterosexism, genderism, and other forms of oppression.
(iii) Examine my own power and privilege.
(iv) Work to advocate for one or more oppressed groups to which I may or may not belong.
(v) Tell my friends (Hokies or otherwise) about the pledge!

The definition of ally is a person, group, or nation that is associated with another or others for some common cause or purpose. Are you an ally of the LGBTQ? We are asking for all those in support of equal civil rights and the right to marry whom you choose to sign this pledge. Discrimination based on gender, sex, religion, class, and age all exist. By signing this pledge you STAND UP AGAINST all these forms of oppression.
At Virginia Tech we have a strong, loving LGBTQ community that includes EVERYONE. We want to show the university, the town, and the state how united we are! Wouldn't this world be a better place if it were more inclusive, more accepting, more LOVING?
So, we are asking you, to make this commitment and sign this pledge to be an ally!
