OUT OF SIGHT-OUT OF MIND..."Raise awareness about the injustice of the IPP sentence".
The Issue
I am a mature social work student at Bournemouth University and am committed to promoting social justice for all. In my lifes journey, I have come across various injustices, but none as poignant as the plight of individuals languishing under the Imprisonment for Public Protection (IPP) sentence. This issue is deeply personal to me because it has been sidelined for far too long, hidden from the public eye as prisoners remain out of sight and often out of mind. It's a tragedy that a person can languish indefinitely in prison, trapped by what is deemed as a safety precaution, while real justice gets lost in the system.
The IPP sentence, originally introduced in the UK to protect the public from dangerous offenders, has unjustly ensnared thousands, some of whom have served well beyond their initial tariff terms without clear paths to release or rehabilitation. The IPP sentence was abolished in 2012. According to data from the Ministry of Justice, as of 2021, over 1,700 prisoners remained under IPP, many experiencing severe mental health declines due to indefinite detention. This punishment does not only affect the prisoners but extends its shadows to their families, contributing to cycles of distress and poverty.
This injustice is often swept under the rug, deemed a 'niche' concern, but it is a glaring blemish on our justice system that requires urgent attention and action. In acknowledging this, I aim to bring the issue of IPP prisoners into the light. There is an immediate need for comprehensive reform, prioritizing reevaluation of detention, implementing clear guidelines for parole, and providing essential rehabilitative support for reintegration into society.
We have the power to urge policymakers to review and revise the IPP sentence, to push for legislative change that ensures no individual is kept unjustly incarcerated without end. With your support, we can amplify the voices of those hidden within the prison system, shed light on this chronic injustice, and move towards a fair and equitable society for all.
Please join me in this mission. Sign this petition to demand justice and humane treatment for IPP prisoners now. Your signature matters—it’s a step towards systemic change and social justice for everyone who has been unjustly silenced.
