Our Village, Our Decisions: A Petition for Bourbonnais

The Issue

We believe in local control and local priorities.

Our police already work hard to keep Bourbonnais safe, and their time and resources should stay focused right here, protecting our neighborhoods and families.

We’re asking the Village Board to make clear that village property, from parking areas to public buildings, should never be used by federal agencies to stage, detain, or carry out civil immigration enforcement, and to add signage stating such.

This reflects the intent of Illinois law by keeping local resources focused on community priorities, while making expectations clear for how village property can be used.

Federal immigration activity on village property can create fear and discourage community access. This ordinance keeps local spaces welcoming and focused on residents, not immigration enforcement.

This is a practical, community-first step that reinforces local control, strengthens trust in local government and law enforcement, and ensures that Bourbonnais spaces serve the people who live and work here.

This is not a novel idea. Such places that have passed ordinances (distinction is important here between ordinance, resolution and executive order) like this include:
Batavia IL, Aurora IL, Evanston IL, Skokie IL, Wilmette IL, Carpentersville IL, and Oak Park IL.

This is a local effort led by residents of Bourbonnais. If you live anywhere in Kankakee County, Illinois, or elsewhere, your support still helps show that communities across the state and country value local control and trust in government.
