Our Mother Tree /Tocobaga
The Issue
An effort needs to be made to write into law the ability for a historic Mother Tree to live the full extent of its life. At the top of the Indian Mound at Philippe Park marks a sign that says " decaying trees are essential to the survival of many species " Might I add that our survival depends on this too. The beautiful towering oaks, palms, mangroves and so many other species of plants, animals, and fungi have held our beloved historical site together for our community to gather and thrive.
Trees talk and I speak for the trees. When a mother tree is lost, so is it's ability to communicate with its symbiotes, and members of its family. This rare plant can recognize a bad neighbor and let it starve while it communicates to the rest exactly how to navigate in its ecosystem.
Some say this tree presents a hazard to people and property. I say move the parking lot, not the multi-million dollar tree that's stood for centuries. When it falls we must know where it's remains go. In the meantime let's put up signs, and make an educational plack so others understand the issue clearly.
So what if when it falls it breaks a structure designed for leisure. If we take out this tree now we could watch Tocobaga Mound slide down into Old Tampa Bay. In 2024 a rare powerful hurricane hit Tampa so hard we lost an essential oak near the mound. No trees have been planted to replaces it, and ever since erosion has continued to expose the roots of live trees. Let's make moves. Let's plant trees. I say if a branch falls on me during my daily walk here, than I've live life to the fullest.
Sign today to make it the cities duty to communicate exactly it's intentions when interacting with our ancient trees. Do it now to stop the disregard of flora, fauna, and funga in our the lands that have been blessed by our tribal ancestors.
