Appeal for Peace in Europe

The Issue

We, the undersigned citizens of the European Union, publicly express our deep concern at the situation created in Eastern Europe, in particular on the Russian-Ukrainian border.

PEACE is an invaluable asset, and its sustainability corresponds to a civilizational advance that we do not sacrifice and that chooses the negotiation path as the only way to resolve conflicts.

Too many European generations were forced to live the tragedy of wars whose consequences will never be erased, and which constituted atrocious crimes against humanity. The immense pain caused by the two great wars of the XX century continues to hang over Europe.

Decisions taken in centres of power that are still overwhelmingly occupied by men tend, with deplorable frequency, to turn to belligerence, which is all the more serious when all studies indicate that, at present, the main victims of armed conflicts are civilians, especially women and children who have not been heard or even their integrity and safety taken into account. Biodiversity and the environment are also subject to irreparable damage that knows no borders and affects us all.

War is an anachronistic option, contrary to ethics, cruel and unworthy of peoples who claim to want to promote peace, solidarity, and democracy.

We, therefore, condemn imprudent statements about the possible use of nuclear weapons, which constitutes a threat of a crime against humanity of catastrophic planetary proportions that we consider truly inconceivable at this stage of human development, as well as we condemn the annexation of the Crimean Peninsula and the siege and destabilization of the Donbass province.

No one has the legitimacy or moral authority to impose on us citizens, women and men, the immense suffering of a war.

Thus, we declare our support for the peaceful resolution, through negotiation, of this conflict and we warn our Governments, as well as the European Union and NATO, that we will not support a warmongering initiative.

Finally, we appeal to the citizens of Russia and Ukraine to join us in condemning and opposing any form of belligerence.

We recall the 10 UN Security Council Resolutions on Women, Peace and Security that have to be observed in the international policy framework:  1325 (2000), 1820 (2008), 1888 (2008), 1889 (2009), 1960 (2010), 2106 (2013), 2122 (2013), 2242 (2015), 2467 (2019) and 2493 (2019).
