Our Families Are Not Just Numbers or Immigration Cases — Protect Family Reunification
The Issue
Families are being forced to wait, worry, and live with the possibility of being separated from the people they love.
Current U.S. travel restrictions affect nationals of 39 countries, creating painful barriers for families who simply want the opportunity to reunite through lawful immigration pathways. At the same time, H.R. 8586 proposes significant changes to family-based immigration that could affect families who are trying to build a future together legally.
Behind every immigration case is a human being. A mother waiting for her child. A husband separated from his wife. A parent hoping to hold their child again. A family gathering documents and saving money, preparing to finally begin a legal immigration process—only to wonder whether the door will still be open when they are ready to file.
This is not only about people who already have a case.
It is about families with pending cases, approved petitions, people preparing to file, and families who have not yet been able to begin the process but are planning to do so.
For many, the uncertainty is heartbreaking. Years can pass while loved ones remain separated, birthdays are missed, children grow up without parents nearby, and families are left wondering when—or if—they will finally be together.
We understand that the United States has a responsibility to protect national security. But families should not become invisible in that process.
We are asking policymakers to listen to the people whose lives are directly affected, carefully consider the humanitarian and family consequences of these policies, and protect meaningful lawful pathways for family reunification.
Families should have a chance to be together.
Families who follow the law should have a chance to reunite.
And families who are preparing to take that legal step should not lose hope before they even have the opportunity to begin.
Our families are not just numbers or immigration cases. They are people waiting for the chance to be together.
