Oregon Health & Science University: Don't Cut the Rural Clerkship Curriculum

With the curriculum transformation underway, the Rural Clerkship is under fire and set to become an option for any one of the core clerkships, instead of standing on its own as an experience in rural Oregon outpatient medicine.
We vocally oppose this move, as it would impact the amount of outpatient, hands-on experiences in which we are eagerly incorporated into patient care. This has significantly impacted the physician workforce of Oregon.
OHSU stands to lose its foothold as a national leader in primary care and rural medicine with this change. The 2013 US News and World Report Rankings list OHSU as #3 in primary care, #5 in family medicine. “The Oregon Health and Science University is a highly ranked medical school especially renowned for training in primary care, rural medicine, and family medicine. Medical students begin clerkships in their third year and must work in a rural or medically underserved setting before graduation.“ http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-medical-schools/oregon-health-and-science-university-04094
