Oregon DHS’s Failure to Protect Children

Oregon DHS’s Failure to Protect Children
The Issue
There is a child who has been receiving physical and mental abuse for several years, as well as the victim of recent sexual misconduct, at the hand of an abusive parent in Eastern Oregon. The Condon DHS office has been aware of the situation for years and has not done anything to protect the child. Two weeks ago, this teen went into local law enforcement with a relative to have a safety plan put into place to stay with that relative instead of in the abusive home and they cried for three hours at the police station before DHS forced them to go back to the abuser’s home without a safety plan and without listening to their valid concerns of fear of retaliation and their cries for help. The caseworker, Justin Buckley, assigned has been involved with the case for years and has consistently sided with the abuser, even through criminal sodomy investigations, and has not done his due diligence of contacting the child’s biological mother, the abuser’s other victims of sexual misconduct, or the other adult siblings who have also received severe physical abuse from the abuser. The caseworker was made aware of the fact that this teen would cause harm to themselves if they could not escape the abuse and declared the situation as safe regardless. In the less than two weeks since he made this decision, the teen has attempted suicide twice because they felt no one was protecting them and the abuse is too severe for them to be able to live through. This is not the first child that this caseworker and department have neglected to protect, but a long string of bias towards abusers and clear lack of action to protect Oregon’s children. Please help our family in getting this caseworker and DHS department investigated for their lack of action and help us get the two children removed from the home before the unthinkable happens.
