Save Orange Technical College's Fashion Technology Program

Save Orange Technical College's Fashion Technology Program
The Issue
Central Florida has only one non-degree seeking certificate program to teach students the trade of fashion production: Orange Technical College. There are several places offering sewing classes, but they are limited at best, and none are offered at an accredited school. Accreditation is important to those who need financial assistance to afford the classes. The nearest accredited colleges offering similar certificates are in Dallas, Texas (which offers only Costuming option); Boston, Massachusetts; and Los Angeles, California. It appeals to programs such as Vocational Rehabilitation, as they perceive the easy transition from OTC Fashion Technology program to employment with local theme parks. In fact, theme parks look for applicants with this kind of educational background.
When school shut down due to COVID-19, students were able to use skills acquired from the class in order to make hospital-grade masks for essential workers and the community. One student single-handedly made over 830 masks to donate to nurses and doctors in need.
This program has produced numerous new brands in the field of fashion as well as more than several students who have moved on to employment with theme parks, and many who have gone on to big-name fashion schools. To eliminate the program is unwise for the school, and unfair to students, current and prospective.
