The Issue

This petition is to oppose The Sunstone, a proposed Low Income Housing Project to be located at Highway 6 S, adjacent to and south of 1725 S TX 6, for the following reasons. Please sign this petition to show your support to the opposition of this development.

  • Flooding concerns - This building will significantly increase the risk of severe flooding to the surrounding existing properties by decreasing the permeable land space. Given the resulting decrease in porous surface area and the higher elevation needed to construct the new building, neighborhoods behind the structure will take in a significant amount of water anytime it rains.
  • Strain on the infrastructure & emergency services - the area is already experiencing an increase in power surges, power outages, delays in trash pick-up where private service is not in place, and an increase in the frequency of low water pressure. This proposed project will add more burden to an outdated infrastructure that is in need of updates & upgrades to support existing residents & businesses. The proposed housing project will also add strain to Fire Station 86 located immediately across from the Westside School.
  • Traffic - traffic congestion on all roadways, particularly on Briar Forest near Westside Highschool, will increase. Highway 6 traffic will increase too. Issues of safety for ingress and egress of vehicles from the development will not only add to the current congestion, there is no traffic control signal or turn lane to support southbound traffic to cut across the 3-4 northbound lanes and enter the development.
  • School Transportation for Students - The project is located within 3 miles of the elementary, middle and high schools. No bus service is provided by HISD within the 3-mile radius. Metro Services for development are not accessible by a sidewalk or in the immediate vicinity for resident transportation to work, school, or to access other services.
