Opposition on the Implementation of Catch-Up Friday

The Issue

On January 10, 2024, the Department of Education issued a memorandum regarding the implementation of Catch-Up Friday. The method discussed in this memorandum aims to enhance the fundamental, social, and other essential skills required to fulfil the objectives of the basic education curriculum. The programme is also expected to help students become more proficient writers, critical thinkers, readers, and analysts.

However, according to Inquirer.net, the programme does not address the underlying source of the problem, which is a failure to enforce. It is notable that DepEd did not commit to implementing the standards in any of its programme statements or recommendations. Teachers and students observed that some students do not attend classes during catch-up Friday, which concludes that it is not strictly implemented.

Aside from that, teachers do not have any preparation at all for the topics because the implementation was too immediate, and the programme also affected the regular class schedule. The main concern of the students, on the other hand, is that the workloads from the regular schedule are too much for them already, and the additional workloads on catch-up Friday are not even graded or are not part of the grading system, which is the primary reason why students frequently miss class every Friday.
