Opposing Petition to Honor Charlie Kirk and Introduce Turning Point USA in District 214
To: The Board of Education, Township High School District 214
From: Concerned Residents, Alumni, Parents, Students, and Community Members of District 214
Date: September 13, 2025

We, the undersigned, write to express our firm opposition to the recent petition calling for the public honoring of Charlie Kirk and the promotion of Turning Point USA (TPUSA) in Township High School District 214.

While we extend our condolences to Charlie Kirk’s family and acknowledge the loss of life as a tragedy, we must draw a clear line between mourning an individual and publicly endorsing a figure—and a political movement—that has proven to be deeply polarizing, exclusionary, and contrary to the values of inclusivity, academic integrity, and equity that our public schools must uphold.

Why This Petition Is Problematic
1. Charlie Kirk's Public Legacy Is Divisive, Not Unifying
Charlie Kirk was not just an alumnus with a noteworthy resume—he was also the founder and leader of TPUSA, a group that has repeatedly come under criticism for promoting disinformation, attacking educators, and fostering a climate of ideological hostility, particularly toward marginalized communities. His public brand is inextricably linked to a highly partisan agenda that many in our community do not support.

To frame the proposed actions as “non-partisan” or calls for “unity” ignores the very real harm TPUSA has caused in educational settings nationwide. Kirk’s platform has publicly criticized LGBTQ+ students and educators, downplayed systemic racism, and amplified inflammatory rhetoric under the banner of "free speech." These are not values that represent the entirety—or even the majority—of our diverse and inclusive school community.

2. TPUSA Is Not an Educationally Neutral Organization
Unlike groups such as the League of Women Voters—which provides fact-based, nonpartisan voter education—TPUSA functions as a political advocacy group with a clear partisan agenda. Promoting the creation of TPUSA chapters within our high schools under the guise of “balance” undermines the role of schools as spaces for critical thinking, respectful dialogue, and factual discourse.

TPUSA’s public record includes:

Compiling “watchlists” of teachers accused of promoting “liberal bias.”
Hosting speakers who mock or vilify students based on their gender identity, race, or beliefs.
Distributing misinformation about election integrity, climate change, and public health.
This is not the kind of “civic education” we should normalize or institutionalize in our schools.

3. A “Charlie Kirk Day” Would Be Divisive and Inappropriate
Establishing a district-wide day to honor Charlie Kirk risks turning our schools into platforms for political validation rather than spaces of shared learning. While his achievements are notable to some, honoring him at this level would send a message to many students, families, and staff—especially those who have been targeted or alienated by Kirk's rhetoric—that their concerns and lived experiences are secondary.

We ask: What message does this send to LGBTQ+ students? To immigrant families? To teachers who have been publicly maligned by TPUSA? Honoring Kirk would not promote healing—it would deepen division.

What Inclusive Education Really Looks Like
True inclusivity means creating environments where all students feel respected, regardless of political ideology, background, identity, or belief system. It does not mean elevating one controversial voice to a place of honor under the pretense of “free speech” or “equity.” It means upholding educational standards, evidence-based curriculum, and respectful dialogue, without turning schools into battlegrounds for partisan agendas.

Our Request to the Board of Education
We respectfully urge District 214 to:

Decline any formal efforts to honor Charlie Kirk through plaques, honorary days, or official recognitions.
Reject proposals to create or promote TPUSA chapters in District 214 schools.
Reaffirm the district’s commitment to inclusive education by supporting programs that build empathy, civic responsibility, and factual understanding without aligning with any partisan or ideological agenda.

Why This Matters Now
In the wake of national tragedy, it is natural to seek unity. But unity must not come at the cost of our integrity, our values, or the emotional safety of our students. We honor lives best by learning from them, not by uncritically endorsing every aspect of their legacy—especially when that legacy is mired in controversy.

Let us stand for a version of education that is truly inclusive—not one that elevates ideology under the guise of remembrance.

We invite others in the District 214 community—residents, students, teachers, and families—to join us in opposing this petition.

Sign below to uphold the values of equity, inclusion, and academic integrity in District 214.
Let’s keep our schools focused on education—not politics.
