The issue

Clifton Hill and Collingwood, take a stand against Yarra City Council's proposed options for Wellington Street.

Yarra City Council has several proposed options to Wellington Street that will significantly impact it's own community in a number of ways as per below.  Both Council options put forward are not suitable for the local residents and broader Clifton Hill community. Council is currently undertaking a consultation process regarding these options until 9am on Monday October 13.

Reduced community accessibility and parking

The loss of up to 66 car spaces will directly affect, local residents, school families, staff, the church community, and nearby businesses. This also significantly impacts grandparents, carers, and those with limited mobility who rely on safe and convenient access.

Traffic diversion risks

By removing parking and altering traffic flow, more vehicles will be displaced into nearby residential streets such as Council, Noone, Hodgkinson and Gold Streets introducing congestion and hazards in areas never intended to accommodate such volume.  Currently there is a reported 11,000 cars that use Wellington Street each day.  Diverting traffic into side streets is simply not viable. Both options portray that they do not consider the wider traffic masterplan to the area.

Child safety at drop-off and pick-up

Removing a significant number of car parking spaces will worsen an already difficult and congested drop-off/pick-up situation. Parents will be forced to park further away, creating more unsafe crossings and rushed manoeuvres near the school entrance.

Increased cyclist volume and speed

Council has noted that more than 2,000 cyclists already use Wellington Street daily, and the proposed design will only increase this number. While supporting cycling is positive in principle, funnelling such high volumes of fast-moving cyclists alongside a primary school is unsafe. Many are travelling downhill at speed, which poses real hazards to younger children who cannot safely judge or respond.
