The Issue

The ninja sport community stands at a pivotal moment.

As gym owners, coaches, athletes, and families committed to the growth and integrity of competitive ninja, we are deeply concerned about the enforcement of the exclusivity clause by the World Ninja League (WNL)—a clause that prohibits affiliated gyms from hosting or participating in competitions held by other leagues.

This policy undermines the diverse, collaborative, and athlete-centered spirit that has fueled the rise of ninja sports for over a decade.

Why We Oppose the Exclusivity Clause:
1. It Stifles Growth and Accessibility
Restricting gym participation to a single league limits access to events, particularly in regions with few facilities. It discourages gyms from experimenting with different formats, hosting more frequent events, and welcoming a wider variety of athletes—especially youth and newcomers. Diversity in league formats (e.g., UNAA’s endurance courses, NSC’s skills-based formats, FINA’s international standards) drives creativity, participation, and overall growth.

2. It Threatens Gym Sustainability
For many gyms, competitions are more than a passion—they are essential to financial stability. Hosting events from multiple leagues increases attendance, memberships, and community engagement. Forcing gym owners to choose a single league creates unnecessary strain, reduces flexibility, and risks alienating parts of their athlete base. An inclusive approach would support the viability of ninja gyms—especially smaller or newer ones working to gain traction.

3. It Erodes Community Unity
The ninja community was built on collaboration—between gyms, league founders, coaches, and parents. WNL itself emerged from this spirit of shared innovation. Enforcing exclusivity fosters division, not unity. It pits leagues and gyms against one another, rather than creating an environment where athletes can compete across events, learn from one another, and raise the bar together.

4. It Limits Athlete Development
Ninja athletes benefit from exposure to multiple formats. Whether preparing for international competition or building a lifelong love of sport, access to diverse events shapes more adaptable, resilient competitors. Restricting that access through exclusivity puts limits on athlete potential and discourages well-rounded development.

We Call on the WNL to Reconsider:
We respectfully request that the World Ninja League suspend enforcement of the exclusivity clause and open a conversation with stakeholders across the industry. We propose the following path forward:

Allow gyms to host WNL events while supporting other leagues under clear guidelines
Expand cross-qualifying opportunities to promote inclusivity and excellence
Create a formal mechanism for community feedback and shared policy-making
This is not a rejection of WNL’s contributions. On the contrary we recognize WNL’s tremendous role in shaping competitive ninja. From world-class events to athlete development, the WNL has brought structure and legitimacy to our sport.

But for ninja to continue thriving, we must embrace collaboration over control, and freedom over exclusivity.

Gyms should have the right to choose which leagues they support
