WESTPORT UNITED for Responsible Development is asking for your help as we work to oppose Westport Terrace Views – a proposal to demolish the Westport Inn and replace it with a 200 Unit Multi-Family apartment complex.
A few Updates:
• Over 825 (and counting) Westport residents like you have signed the petition to oppose this proposed development project.
• Westport United is not against affordable housing or responsible development; however the 5-story apartment complex would be incongruous and inharmonious with the Westport surroundings. The project would overwhelm the community and put incredible pressure on schools, traffic, emergency response, life safety, water, electricity, garbage and sewage.
• As a reminder the project, if approved, would be :
- Construction of a 363,328 square foot building on 2.8 acres;
- Five (5) stories, over 80+ feet tall
- 370 parking spaces
- Violates numerous zoning laws in Westport
• Sheldon Stein of Ranger Properties purchased the hotel for $13.1M in 2007 and completed a $3.5M renovated in 2011 for a total investment of $16.6M. The Hotel was opened in 1960 and is a Landmark in Westport, some portions of the Inn date back to the early 1900s.
• In the draft minutes of the Westport Conservation Commission meeting on November 19th, Phil Craft (a local developer) is listed as the owner.
Westport United has initiated its legal challenge to this proposed development, including the following:
1. Our attorney filed an appeal of the November 19 decision by the Conservation Commission to modify the wetlands setback line.
2. We will review and possibly appeal any decisions by the Conservation Commission at the January 21 public hearing
3. We will review and possibly appeal any decisions by Planning & Zoning with respect to this project. Traffic, life safety, environmental impacts, sewer capacity, and fire and police emergency response will be critical elements in our challenge to this development
We are seeking contributions towards the cost of the Legal fees associated with running a compelling opposition. The funds will be used only for Legal and Consulting fees related to opposing the project.
We have retained Joel Green, Esq. of Green & Gross, P.C. Attorneys at Law. Mr. Green is a recognized Land Use attorney who has successfully represented neighborhood groups in challenges to similar housing developments.
Please consider making a contribution to this effort.
A donation of $50, $100, $500 or more would be greatly valued.
