Oppose Trump's Proposed 25% Tariff on Canada and Mexico

The Issue

We oppose President Trump's proposed 25% tariff on imports from Canada and Mexico. While tariffs may sometimes be appropriate, this move threatens to increase costs for American consumers and put undue financial pressure on families already struggling to make ends meet.

History has shown us that tariffs of this magnitude can frequently backfire. In 1930, the Smoot-Hawley Act raised tariffs on over 20,000 imported goods to record levels, widely seen today as an error sparking international retaliation and contributing to the Great Depression (source: Economic History Association). This proposed 25% tariff raises similar concerns of a potential trade war, destabilizing our economy and hurting working families the most.

Moreover, this tariff is projected to cost 2.6 million American jobs (source: Chamber of Commerce). We cannot afford to put our economy and the livelihoods of hardworking Americans at risk with this tariff.

Canada and Mexico are two of our largest trading partners, and many of the goods we rely on—such as food, clothing, and household items—are imported from these neighboring countries. A 25% tariff would act as a direct tax on these products, leading to higher prices at the checkout counter. Families across the United States, especially those with tight budgets, would feel the brunt of these increases.

We urge the American government to avoid broad tariffs and prioritize economic stability. Each signature added to this petition is a call to protect the interests of American families and the health of our economy. Please, sign this petition and voice your opposition against the proposed 25% tariff.
