The Issue

We as the Troy School District Student Equity Council are calling on our OneTroy community to oppose the recent regulation of the Troy School District, which prohibits the display of most flags on school property, including the Pride Flag. This decision, which is outlined in section 1.15 of the district regulations, While the Troy School District allows for the display of the American Flag, the State of Michigan Flag, the Troy City Flag, and the Troy Public Schools Flag, it restricts the display of other flags, including those that represent marginalized communities within the district.

For example, the Pride Flag is more than just another flag- it stands to be an important symbol of belonging & equity for LGBTQ+ students, staff, and their families. Banning the Pride Flag sends a harmful message that these values are not upheld in our schools and that the identities of LGBTQ+ individuals are not welcome or respected. This exclusion fully contradicts the district's stated goals of promoting a safe, inclusive, and supportive learning environment for all students.

The ability to display the Pride Flag and other symbols of diversity is pivotal in fostering an environment where every student feels seen and valued. Our schools must reflect the rich diversity of our community and show unequivocal support for all its members. This policy not only hinders free expression but also undermines efforts toward equity and inclusion within the district.

By signing this petition, you are standing up against this regulation and advocating for a more inclusive and transparent environment in the Troy School District. Together, we can ensure that our schools are places where every student, regardless of their identity, can feel safe and respected for who they are.
Join us in urging the Troy School District to reconsider this regulation, to encourage fair prosses and transparency, and to allow the display of the Pride Flag and other symbols that promote diversity, belonging, and equity.
