The Issue

The City of Krum is directly adjacent to the proposed site for the Community Forever Tiny Home Homeless Village. The Denton City Council is going to consider a Comprehensive Plan Amendment to allow this project to move forward.

We recognize the importance of addressing homelessness in a compassionate and effective manner. However, this project presents significant risks that could negatively affect the safety, security, and quality of life for our families and neighborhoods.

  • Our homes, schools, and local businesses are integral parts of our community, and this proposed project threatens all of them.
  • At the same time the concepts for this project, as shared to date, are missing critical success elements and any meaningful plan for protecting and enriching the community around it.

Krum is a community of hardworking individuals, and we fear that the establishment of a tiny home homeless village so close to our homes could drastically alter our way of life and sense of safety.

  • Our properties, which we consider sanctuaries, will almost certainly see a decline in value, and our schools, where our children deserve a safe environment, could also be impacted.
  • The proposed site is not equipped with the necessary infrastructure, resources, or nearby job opportunities to support such a community, and no plans for such have been shared beyond vague concepts with no actual documentation of project plans or ongoing management processes.
  • Our municipal resources are already stretched thin due to recent growth, and the addition of this project would place an undue burden on our city services.

Additionally, the Community Forever non-profit has failed to engage our community in a meaningful way.

  • They have not shared any relevant information on an ongoing basis, nor shared any plans for how they would protect our interests and make a positive impact on our community while attempting to address homelessness.
  • What little information that has been shared has focused more on a market, a bistro, a movie theater, and a fishing pond while sharing very little of the needs and demands of providing critical wrap around services for a transitioning homeless community.
  • Their approach seems under-prepared and ill-equipped for a project of this magnitude, which could lead to unintended negative consequences.

The proposed location is not suitable, and we believe it will have lasting negative impacts on our community. Furthermore, there is evidence to suggest that homeless villages can increase crime rates in surrounding areas (Urban Institute, Washington D.C.). We also question whether this solution is truly sustainable, as it could simply relocate homelessness without addressing its root causes, leaving individuals without meaningful pathways to stability.

We urge Denton City Council to deny the Comprehensive Plan Amendment being requested and explore alternative solutions that are more appropriate for all residents. We need humane, comprehensive, and sustainable approaches to addressing homelessness—solutions that prioritize both the well-being of those in need and the safety and stability of our community.

We ask for your support in safeguarding our community. Please sign this petition to make your voice heard and stand with us against this proposal.
